Let me say up front that I don’t see anyone stopping Serena Williams from winning the US Open this year. But nothing’s ever that certain in tennis, and there are some fascinating battles coming up. On her day Li Na can beat anyone. She probably would have won the Australian Open if they hadn’t stopped for fireworks. So that’s going to be a super match-up and the result is certainly no foregone conclusion. Li Na is a fascinating character – and not just because she was the first high-profile woman in China to have a tattoo on her chest. You just never know quite what you’re going to get from her. A shock cannot be ruled out, though Serena simply looks too strong.
As for the other semi-final, who wouldn’t like to see 31-year-old Flavia Pennetta pull off a shock against Victoria Azarenka? I don’t know Azarenka, but the wailing…the sullen face…the gamesmanship in the past? Let’s just say she has a bit more to do to make the world love her.
