The Canadians are coming!

July 7, 2019

Whisper it softly, but Canada could soon have her first Wimbledon singles champion.

We believe 2021 really could be a very special year for Canadian tennis fans at the Championships.

Tantalisingly close on two recent occasions, it seems the long wait for glory could almost be over.

Milos Raonic reached the Wimbledon final in 2016 and Eugenie Bouchard did it in 2014. They both came so close to the ultimate dream.

But Bianca Andreescu’s US Open triumph in 2019 gave Canadian tennis fans their first Grand Slam singles champion.

Andreescu has the winning habit. And the tennis world believes she also has what it takes to dominate the women’s game for years to come.

Wimbledon 2021 could easily be Bianca’s time to shine!

And yet she isn’t the only exciting young force to take our sport by storm. Whatever Canada is doing to develop young players, they seem to be doing it right!

Felix Auger-Aliassime reached the third round of Wimbledon in 2019 and broke into the top twenty. He is regarded as a potential Grand Slam winner of the future.

So is Denis Shapovalov, who was ecstatic when he won Junior Wimbledon in 2016 and still has time on his side.

Canada’s finest are already thrilling the world with their spectacular stroke-play and fearless tennis.

And let’s not forget that Raonic and his big-serving, deceptively versatile game is always a massive threat to opponents on the grass at Wimbledon. Milos is still in his prime and could come strong again. So could Bouchard.

In the doubles, Canadian glory is already a reality. Daniel Nestor won the Wimbledon men’s doubles in 2008 and 2009 and the mixed doubles in 2013.

But it is Bianca Andreescu who is now the talk of tennis. Can she make more history at Wimbledon?

Truly, there has never been a better time for Canadian fans to buy tickets for the Championships.

Could there be a golden year when both the women’s and men’s singles titles are won by Canadians? It is more than possible.

But Bianca’s time, you sense, has already come.

Who would want to miss Bianca, Felix, Denis, Milos and Genie at Wimbledon 2020? Entertainment is guaranteed – and silverware is a strong possibility.
