Have you enjoyed Wimbledon 2016 so far?
In reverse order, here are our top five moments from Week 1 at Wimbledon.
Andy Murray didn’t make the list this time. But we certainly won’t be complaining if he features at the end of the second week!
5/ Pocket rocket Dominika Cibulkova takes down Eugenie Bouchard (above) in stunning style after the Canadian had appeared to be back to her best. Talk about fired up! Her victory cry could probably be heard all the way back in Slovakia!
4/ Taylor Fritz gives Stan Wawrinka a run for his money on Court 1, the 18-year-old hinting at a bright future for American men’s tennis. He doesn’t have an adult’s power yet. But he already has all the shots.
3/ Sam Querrey achieves one of the great tennis giant-killings by beating the imperious Novak Djokovic against all odds – showing us that American men’s tennis is pretty good now as well. Querrey just wouldn’t quit…until it was Djokovic who had finally had enough.
2/ Jo Wilfried Tsonga beats John Isner 19-17 in the fifth set on “People’s Sunday.” An epic and a marathon, played in the right spirit, won by a nice guy and celebrated in style. What drama! What a treat!
1/ Roger Federer’s unforgettable match against qualifier Marcus Willis on Centre Court. The magical first time the underdog won a game, the thrill when he even led a set. The stuff that dreams are made of. Every moment of this occasion was extraordinary.
That’s it. You’ll have your own favourite moments. But the atmosphere the day Willis found his feet against Federer was truly unique and you can see why it captured our imagination.
